Conference July 2023

SLCC Norfolk Branch Annual Conference

On Friday, 7 July 2023, SLCC Norfolk held their Annual Conference.  Clerks and Councillors from across Norfolk and beyond joined together at the renowned Norwich City Football Club, Carrow Road, Norwich.

Delegates were welcomed by Gina Lopes, SLCC Norfolk Branch Chairman, who invited this year’s SLCC President, Linda Carter, to address the Conference.  We were honoured to have Linda with us throughout the day who inspired us all with her plans to “Wing Walk” the following week to raise funds for her chosen charity, “Centrepoint”.

There was a varied programme on offer with many new Speakers delivering a wide range of topics from “rewilding” and “green care” to “youth engagement”.  There was a general buzz in the room with lots of interest and time to ask questions at the end of each session.  Most of our Speakers remained with us and took further individual queries as the day progressed providing expert knowledge and the chance to chat informally.

We were lucky to have a lovely sunny day and to spill out on to the terrace to overlook the perfectly mown pitch during the refreshment breaks.  As well as enjoying the culinary delights of “Delia’s Kitchen” attendees spent time networking with colleagues both old and new.

Several Exhibitors had set out their trade stands and were on hand to answer queries and demonstrate their products which were all related to our Sector. The many “freebies” on offer also raised several smiles and happy chatter.

Overall feedback confirmed the Conference was considered “Excellent/Good” by attendees, however, the Branch is always interested to hear what our members would like in the future so please let us know.

Thanks to Linda Carter, SLCC President, all our Speakers and our Exhibitors, too many to list, members of the SLCC Norfolk Executive Committee, the staff at Carrow Road, and special thanks to Alan Fairchild, MBE for acting as Compere on the day.

Branch Annual General Meeting 2023

SLCC Norfolk Branch Annual General Meeting & Networking Day

SLCC Norfolk members gathered together to hold their AGM on Thursday, 18 May 2023 in Weston Longville, Norfolk, we were blessed with a lovely sunny day and there was a good turnout.

The Executive Committee was resolved from nominations received and we are pleased to welcome new members Neil Watson, Doreen Joy, Simon Bower and Hayley Goldson and Jimmy Miller.  Outgoing members Tracey Bayfield, Richard Bishop, Gabbie Joyce and Becky Buck, were thanked for their great contribution over many years serving on the Committee.

Gina Lopes was re-elected as Branch Chairman, with Sarah Bristow stepping us as Vice-Chairman and Sue Lake re-elected as Treasurer.  Sarah has agreed to carry on as Branch Secretary for the short term but is looking to hand this over in the near future.

Following the AGM, invited speakers Jamie Charters and Lee Jaggers of CCLA gave an interesting presentation on Investment Management.  Jo Furner, Deputy Monitoring Officer, North Norfolk then took to the floor and spoke in depth on the new Code of Conduct. The last session was entitled “A Clerk’s work is never done!” which I think we can all relate to! Committee members, Julie King and Jimmy Miller, headed this session, both are experienced trainers and gave advice and tips for new Clerks and those who are more experienced. All three sessions prompted some good debate and there was a lot of interaction in the room which carried on into lunch.

Finally, the day ended with the networking lunch which provided a chance to chat and catch up with old friends and also meet new colleagues.

The event was kindly sponsored by CCLA and our thanks is extended to them for their ongoing support - www.ccla.co.uk

Our next event is our Annual Conference at Norwich City Football Club and will be held on 7 July 2023, we very much look forward to seeing everyone again on the day. For more info please contact us: Norfolk@slcc.co.uk

Conference March 2022

SLCC Norfolk Branch Annual Conference
Held on 25 March 2022
At Norwich City Football Club, Carrow Road, Norwich

The SLCC Norfolk Branch was delighted to welcome over 40 attendees to their first face-to-face Conference since the pandemic.  The sun shone over the beautifully mown pitch at the famous Carrow Road and there was a general buzz in the air as colleagues met each other once again and also welcomed many newcomers.

Mr Philip Peacock, SLCC President, was given a warm welcome as he addressed delegates both in his initial speech as the Society’s President and then later as the final speaker.

The Branch Officers decided to move away from the more traditional agenda and focus on green issues and climate change.  The all-day event offered speakers from many different backgrounds with Dr Nigel Hargreaves, founder of Synfo, taking to the floor first.  He provided a thought-provoking presentation on Climate Change and how to tackle it at grass roots level. The day proceeded with speakers from Norfolk Fire and Rescue, Rigby Taylor, Blachere illuminations and Green and Clean cemeteries by Mr Alan Fairchild.  Delegates confirmed the calibre of the speakers in their feedback forms which resulted in all speakers receiving a majority rating of “Excellent”!

There was a wide range of sector specific trade stands to visit and lots of opportunity to network with colleagues and speakers.

Everyone enjoyed a scrumptious lunch from Delia’s Kitchen and refreshments throughout the day. There was also the opportunity to take a sneaky peak at the football pitch from the terraces.

After such a great day it is planned to offer more events later in the year for Norfolk members.
